THE FOUNDING OF THE YAN TARU was authorized by Shaykh Uthman ibn Fuduye. When all the men were getting their share-out of official appointments Nana Asma'u asked him, "What about us, the women?" and he replied "You will be over all the women. The women of the Caliphate belong to the women and the men belong to the men". The Shaykh prayed for them and authorised the bringing of sadaqa (charity) to them.

Nana Asma'u, scholar, educator, and Islamic leader, (1793-1864) established the historical Yan Taru over 150 years ago in West Africa as a means of educating and serving the women of her society.

We, in America today, see her as a role model and her method as a blue print of how we can, as Muslim women, benefit ourselves and our communities without compromising our religion or dignity.
